Political Graffiti /
Public Discourse
During my Unit 2 work at LCC, I explored political graffiti as a mode of public discourse. I was initially inspired by this concept after observing a three-way handscrawled conversation on a storefront in Bricklane saying: "Puta Espana," "Visca Catalunya," and "I Love Spain." My experimentation of stenciling six American flags along Leake Street, a legal graffiti wall, was an attempt to persuade graffiti artists to leave a message or reaction to the graphic. I was trying to create a dialogue between myself and passerbys. The project work also coincided with Barack Obama's visit to the UK and Osama Bin Laden's assasination, and I was interested to use the medium and the public environment to gauge public opinion of recent events. The final pieces consist of a visual summary book documenting the process and set of six stenciled posters.Public Discourse
